Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Overview

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
COVID-19 is transmitted from contaminated droplets spread by coughing, sneezing and contact with contaminated hands, surfaces or objects.
People infected with COVID-19 may experience mild to moderate respiratory illness. Elderly people and some people with underlying medical problems (e.g. chronic illness, compromised immune systems) are more at risk of developing serious illness.

Symptoms

The time between exposure to the virus and when symptoms first appear can range from 2 to 14 days.

People infected with COVID-19 may experience:

  • fever
  • cough
  • tiredness
  • runny nose
  • sore throat
  • shortness of breath
  • aches and pains

People experiencing any of the above symptoms should contact their doctor and seek medical advice.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing severe symptoms, please call 000.

Prevention- protect yourself and others

To slow the transmission of COVID-19 and prevent infection, you must:

  • Practice good hygiene.
  • Clean your hands regularly – wash your hands with soap & water or use alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Practice respiratory etiquette (cough into a flexed elbow and cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing).
  • Practice social and physical distancing.
  • Understand how to self-isolate if needed.
  • Avoid touching your face.
